Best Companies to Work For: 10 Health Care Providers Make the Grade

Each year, FORTUNE magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list highlights the accomplishments of organizations that have found ways to successfully recruit, satisfy and retain employees. The 2012 list includes 10 health care providers among other elite industries who have made it a priority to keep its employee turnover low, benefits high and an organizational culture that’s second to none.

Two NRC Picker clients made the list.

NRC Picker client St. Jude’s Research Hospital (Memphis, TN) made its second appearance on the list, coming in at number 39. Last year, St. Jude’s was at number 80.

St. Jude employees put the organization’s mission – finding cures, saving children – as the top reason St. Jude is a great place to work. The hospital’s mission is to advance cures for pediatric catastrophic illnesses through treatment and research.

In addition, the hospital provides a work environment that promotes enhanced communication between senior leadership and staff, a Wellness Program that is devoted to fitness and overall well being and programs that promote diversity in the workplace.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Atlanta, GA) came in at number 49 and has appeared on the list for seven consecutive years. The hospital earned special recognition for being a top company for women and minorities and was recognized as achieving top pay for hourly and salaried employees.

Linda Matzigkeit, Chief Administrator Officer at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, responded.

“We believe that the best way to help an organization reach its potential is by helping employees reach theirs. By doing this, we get even closer to our vision to transform pediatric healthcare and be the leading voice for the health of Georgia’s children.”

The hospital provides a diverse work atmosphere and is devoted to its wellness program, Strong4Life. The program launched in the summer of 2008 and employees have lost 45,000 pounds collectively as an organization since its inception. The hospital encourages employees to take part in the Strong4Life health assessment, and those who participate receive a discount on their health care premiums.

Fortune partnered with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the surveys that were used in compiling the list.
